The moon shines over Penedés tonight and cicadas play as a nice ending to a busy day. Not only did our incredibly poor GPS, not find addresses or the direct coordinates, which turned out to be a problem. We started the day by driving out of Barcelona towards Sant Sadurni d'Anoia and our first visit with Agusti Torello Mata, whose family business is situated just above the town, ten minutes from the train station. Agusti Torello Mata has produced his own cava since the fifties and now it is him and his four children, who runs the firm. We were welcomed by the daughter Lali that showed us around in the basements and the production.
The harvest began in August and now it is the Parellada as the last grape hat waits to be harvested. Agusti Torello Mata is a bit of a traditionalist and uses only the three traditional grapes Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada in their caves. We were lucky enough to taste the must from the newly harvested Macabeu and Xarel-lo recently put into the fermentation tanks. Great taste, good and fruity, with a "fizz" that will disappear when the wine is completely fermented. The Xarel-lo juice had only fermented for one week and contained only 3 vol% of alcohol, which meant we could enjoy it without worry, since we were driving. The oldest son in the family, which shares first name with his father, is the one who has taken over the leadership over the house. With his oenological education and experience, he follows in his father's footsteps and keep the quality, continuity, tradition, clear guiding principles. The house has long had a tradition of aging their caves for a long time, which is a bit unusual among cava producers in general. The house produces only Reserva and Gran Reserva, and their prestige cava, Kripta, is aged or five years before it is put out on the market. It has become a cult wine, and with a production of only 30 000 per year they sell out every year. This cava family makes truly great caves and is well worth a visit if you are nearby. Naturally, I will definitely stop by next time I'm in the area.
